Budget Friendly Kosher Vacation for Large Families
Estimated reading time: 9 minutes
Planning a budget-friendly kosher vacation for a large family can feel overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. Kosher vacation rentals make it easy, offering space, a kosher kitchen, and access to nearby shuls and food. From Florida to Israel, here’s how to find the perfect spot for your next getaway, without breaking the bank.
The Jewish community has grown immensely over the past few decades. This beautiful and tremendous blessing has allowed Jewish families to flourish in cities, suburbs, and even remote corners of the world.
However, with this growth has come physical distance between loved ones. Gone are the days when most families lived just a short walk from one another. These days, it’s not unusual for siblings to live in different states, or even on entirely different continents.
Growing up, my entire extended family lived within a three-block radius. My grandparents’ home was the heart of our family life. On long Motzei Shabbos evenings, we’d all pile in, and on those endless Shabbos afternoons, the women would gather to shmooze, enjoy Shalosh Seudos, and simply spend time together, while the men were in shul.
But today, for so many, families are spread so far apart that those “hop-in, hop-out” moments are a thing of the past. For many, family time now comes with a price tag and significant travel time.
What if there were a way to make these cherished family gatherings happen again? Welcome to the world of kosher vacation rentals, a budget-friendly solution that brings Jewish families together while accommodating their unique traditions and needs.
There are many who feel hesitant about planning an official extended family gathering, it can seem like too much to organize, too expensive, or just overwhelming. But what if there were a way to bring the entire family together, comfortably and affordably?
Kosher vacation rentals offer exactly that,a chance to reunite with loved ones without breaking the bank or feeling like it’s too much to handle. Whether you’re looking for a cozy getaway or something a bit more luxurious, there are options for every budget. From simple homes to sprawling mansions, you can find a rental that fits your family’s needs without compromising on comfort or tradition.
My Family’s Memorable Shabbat Getaway
Recently, my extended family gathered for a Shabbos Kosher getaway at a beautiful kosher vacation rental in the Catskills. At first, the idea felt a bit overwhelming, but one of my sisters-in-law created a handy Excel sheet to organize everything, food, activities, swag, and all the essentials we’d need. It made all the difference.
To keep things manageable, we decided that each couple would take responsibility for a different meal. Not only did this lighten the workload for everyone, but it also gave each family a chance to add their own unique touch to the food, decor, and program for their meal.
All in all, it was a beautiful Shabbos. Everyone enjoyed spending quality time together, which was, of course, the most important part. I’m excited to share with you all the different elements that made it so special!
Why Kosher Vacation Rentals Are Perfect for Large Families
I have so much to share about why our kosher Airbnb experience was amazing in every way. Keeping it within a reasonable budget was very important to us. but kosher food options and multiple hotel rooms can get expensive fast.
Our kosher villa experience was amazing in every way. Kvation made it easy to find a kosher vacation rental that fit our needs. The rental property had plenty of room for everyone, and because it was a kosher home, we could bring our own food, cook, and enjoy stress-free meals.
Even better, since Kvation kosher rentals are near shuls, we found Jewish grocery stores nearby, making it easy to get anything we needed, including the option for grocery delivery!
Here are some tips we utilized:
1. It’s Actually Affordable
Hotels may seem convenient, but booking multiple rooms for a large family adds up quickly. Kosher villa rentals provide private homes with multiple bedrooms, spacious kitchens, and family-friendly amenities, all at a fraction of the cost per person.
2. Cook, Order or Do Both
One of the most significant advantages of kosher vacation rentals is the ability to prepare your own meals. Dining out while traveling can be expensive, especially for kosher families, and the options may be limited depending on your destination.
Bringing your own ingredients is budget-friendly, but if you’d rather not pack everything, many kosher homes are near Jewish grocery stores, and most offer grocery delivery for added convenience!
3. Room for Everyone
As mentioned previously, in addition to being more cost-effective, you really can’t compare the amount of space you get in a kosher rental to a hotel. Unlike cramped hotel rooms, kosher home rentals offer loads of state of the art living space, giving your family room to relax, eat, and sleep comfortably.
Whether you’re staying in a kosher villa in Florida, a kosher house in the Catskills, or a kosher vacation rental with a private pool, these properties are designed for families to enjoy quality time together.
In many cases, they come with extra perks like private pools, game rooms, and outdoor spaces, so everyone can enjoy their time together without feeling crowded.
Budget Tips for Large Families
While kosher vacation rentals are already a budget-friendly choice, you can save even more with the following strategies:
1. Use Budgeting Apps
Apps like Splitwise make it easy to divide costs among family members. From groceries to rental fees, everyone can contribute fairly without awkward money conversations.
2. Travel During Off-Peak Seasons
Avoiding peak travel times can significantly reduce costs. Look for rentals during the off-season or book midweek stays to take advantage of lower rates on kosher villas and kosher home rentals.
3. Leverage Group Discounts
Many activities, attractions, and even rental companies offer discounts for large groups. When booking, always ask if group rates are available.
4. Bring Reusable Supplies
Packing reusable plates, cups, and cutlery can save money on disposables while being eco-friendly. These small savings can add up over time, especially for weeklong stays.
*There are many Jewish rentals that do provide reusable supplies.
5. Plan Simple Meals
Opt for affordable, crowd-pleasing dishes like baked ziti, chicken stir-fry, or BBQ dinners. Bulk ingredients like pasta, rice, and frozen vegetables are cost-effective and easy to prepare for a large group.
Packing Tips for Large Family Getaways
To ensure your trip is as smooth and budget-friendly as possible, here are some packing tips tailored to large families and kosher travelers:
1. Plan Meals in Advance
Before you hit the road, create a meal plan for your stay. Pack dry goods like pasta, rice, and cereals, along with kosher snacks. If your rental has a freezer, you can bring pre-cooked meals for easy reheating.
2. Don’t Forget Shabbos Essentials
Most Kvation rentals provide Shabbos amenities, but double-check in advance.
Essentials to bring:
- Candlesticks or tea lights
- Havdalah set
- Challah covers and knife
- Hot plates for warming food
3. Pack Entetainment
Most Kvation kosher home rentals have board games and activities, but it’s always fun to bring some favorites along!
However, at our Shabbos getaway, we encouraged each family to bring along a favorite toy or game to share with the group. The kids were so excited to play with their toys and discover new activities with their cousins.
We made sure to bring age-appropriate toys for each child, ensuring everyone had something fun to enjoy. We also packed board games, card games, and books. Adults can join in on the fun too!
4. Organize by Family Member
For large families, it’s helpful to pack individual suitcases or color-code bags for each member. This avoids confusion and ensures everyone knows where their belongings are.
Fun and Free Activities for Large Families
The beauty of renting a kosher vacation rental is that it provides a home base for countless affordable activities. Here are some ideas:
1. Outdoor Adventures
Many kosher villas and kosher apartment rentals are near parks, hiking trails, and beaches. Plan a family hike, picnic, or day of fishing for a cost-effective way to spend time together.
2. Family Game Tournaments
Bring along classic games like Monopoly, Uno, or Perpetual Commotion. A friendly family tournament can keep everyone entertained for hours without spending a dime.
3. Cooking Together
Make the most of the rental’s kosher kitchen by preparing meals as a family. Assign everyone a task, from chopping and mixing to decorating, turning meal prep into a fun and interactive bonding experience.
4. Talent Shows and Scavenger Hunts
Host a mini talent show or organize a photo scavenger hunt to keep everyone entertained and laughing. These simple, free activities are perfect for both kids and adults, ensuring everyone stays engaged.
5. Family Slideshow
One of the weekend’s highlights was a slideshow of cherished family photos. Each couple shared pictures from their childhood, sparking laughter and nostalgia. It was a fun, free way to connect across generations.
6. S’mores by the Fire
No family getaway is complete without s’mores. Gather around a fire with a disposable grill, marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers for a simple, delightful activity that everyone will enjoy.
7. Kumbaya
Sing together around the campfire to bond, reflect, and create lasting memories. It’s a timeless, heartwarming activity that brings everyone closer and adds to the spirit of the getaway
